چکیده

The globular cluster G1 (Mayall II) in M31 is the most massive (∼10M⊙) stellar cluster in the Local Group, and it has the highest central velocity dispersion (∼28 kms−1). It has been claimed to host a central ∼20,000 M⊙ black hole, but these claims have been controversial. We report here the XMM-Newton detection of X-ray emission from G1 at a level of Lx ≈ 2×1036 ergs−1. This emission could be the result of Bondi-Hoyle accretion of ionized cluster gas by a central black hole, or it could be produced by a conventional low-mass X-ray binary. A precise localization of the X-ray emission, which is not possible with the current XMM data, could distinguish between these possibilities. While such a measurement may be difficult, it is of sufficient potential importance to pursue. Subject headings: globular clusters: individual (Mayall II = G1) — X-rays: binaries

X-ray Localization of the Globular Cluster G1 with Xmm-newton

We present an accurate X-ray position of the massive globular cluster G1 by using XMM-Newton and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The X-ray emission of G1 has been detected recently with XMM-Newton. There are two possibilities for the origin of the X-ray emission. It can be either due to accretion of the central intermediate-mass black hole, or by ordinary low-mass X-ray binaries. The precise ...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Rz2109 and Implications for the Mass of Its Black Hole X-ray Source

We present Keck LRIS spectroscopy of the black hole-hosting globular cluster RZ2109 in the Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. We find that this object has extraordinarily broad [O III]λ5007 and [O III]λ4959 emission lines, with velocity widths of approximately 2,000kms. This result has significant implications for the nature of this accreting black-hole system and the mass of the globular cluste...

Supersoft and Quasisoft X-ray Sources in the Globular Clusters of Ngc 4472: Are They Candidates for Intermediate-mass Black Holes?

We report on possible associations between 6 globular clusters in the Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 (M49) and bright (Lx > 1038 erg s−1) very soft X-ray sources (VSSs). Two of the VSSs have broad-band spectral properties consistent with those of luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs). The other VSSs are somewhat harder harder, possibly with values of k T between roughly 150 eV and 250 eV. T...

Evidence for a Stellar Disruption by an Imbh in an Extragalactic Globular Cluster1

We report [O III] λ5007 Å and [N II] λ6583 Å emission from a globular cluster harboring the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) CXOJ033831.8-352604 in the Fornax elliptical galaxy NGC 1399. No accompanying Balmer emission lines are present in the spectrum. One possibility is that the forbidden lines emanate from X-ray illuminated debris of a star that has been tidally-disrupted by an intermediate-...
